Jostaberry is a hardy fruiting shrub that produces dark purple, grape-sized berries with a sweet-tart flavor. It is a hybrid of black currant and gooseberry, grown for strong production, good garden toughness, and easy harvesting. The berries are excellent for fresh eating when fully ripe, and they are especially popular for jam, syrup, juice, pies, and freezing.

Grow zones and site needs

USDA grow zones: Typically 3-8

Sun: Full sun for best yield and flavor, part shade is tolerated (helpful in hotter summer areas)

Soil: Well-drained soil with added organic matter, avoid waterlogged spots

Water: Keep evenly moist during establishment and while fruit is sizing up for the best berry set

Bloom time: Spring

Ripening window: Mid-summer in many regions, often June to July depending on climate

Harvest notes: Pick when berries are fully dark and slightly soft. Flavor improves as fruit finishes ripening on the bush.

Growth rate and mature size

Growth rate: Moderate to fast once established

Mature size: Commonly 4-6 ft tall and 4-6 ft wide

Plant habit: Upright, branching shrub, usually thornless or nearly thornless

Pollination

Jostaberry is generally self-fertile, so one plant can produce fruit on its own. Planting a second jostaberry often improves total yield and can help with more consistent crops, especially if you have good pollinator activity.

Planting and care basics

Spacing: About 4-5 ft between plants for airflow and easy picking

Pruning: In late winter or early spring, remove a few older stems to encourage new growth and maintain a productive shape

Maintenance: Mulching helps with moisture control and steady growth, especially in summer heat

Important note

In some areas, currants, gooseberries, and related hybrids have restrictions due to local plant regulations. If you are unsure, check local rules before planting.

How we ship

Most orders go out via UPS with a 2-3 day transit time to most of the continental U.S. Plants are shipped dormant in late winter / early spring, packed wet to protect the root systems, and bundled by variety so they're ready to plant on arrival.

Hawaii & Alaska orders

For HI and AK addresses we ship via USPS. The other major carriers either don't service these areas for live plants or charge prohibitive rates that would more than double the cost of your order. USPS gives us a reliable, affordable path to get plants to you in good condition.

Want UPS or FedEx anyway?

If you're in HI or AK and want to use UPS or FedEx and cover the upgraded shipping cost, reach out to us immediately after placing your order with your order number. We'll send you the available options and a quote, and you can pick what works for you.

Wholesale orders (100+ plants): We only ship wholesale orders on Mondays and Tuesdays. Larger orders sitting in a hot delivery truck over a weekend can damage or even kill the plants, especially for customers in the southern half of the U.S. Shipping early in the week ensures your plants reach you before any weekend transit delays.
