Pixwell has noticeably fewer thorns than most gooseberries, so picking and pruning go faster.

What you'll get
Our Pixwell bushes are dormant and bare root. We dig them fresh and keep them cool until they ship. There's no soil, which keeps shipping costs down and makes planting quick.
We pack them to keep the roots moist in transit. Plant them while they're still dormant and they'll leaf out as the weather warms.

Have a question that isn't here? Ask us when you request your quote.
What's the minimum order for wholesale pricing?
It's 500 plants, and your gooseberries can share that count with our blackberries and raspberries. For example, 250 Pixwell plus 250 raspberries make a 500-plant order. For fewer than 500, our 100-packs are $319 ($3.19 a plant) with free shipping.
How thorny is Pixwell?
It has noticeably fewer thorns than most gooseberries, so picking and pruning go faster. The fruiting branches also hang downward, which puts the berries right where pickers can reach them.
Do I need a second variety for pollination?
No. Gooseberries are self-fertile, so a planting of Pixwell alone will set fruit.
When will the bushes start producing?
Expect a light crop the year after planting, with bigger harvests as the bushes fill out over the next couple of seasons. The berries start pale green and turn a blush pink when they're fully ripe. Some growers pick part of the crop while it's still green for pies and jam, and let the rest ripen for fresh eating.
Where does Pixwell grow best?
It's rated for zones 3 to 8, so it handles cold northern winters. Give it at least 6 hours of sun a day (it tolerates partial shade) and well-drained, moderately fertile soil with plenty of organic matter. Water regularly while the fruit is forming, but don't let the ground stay soggy.
How far apart should I plant Pixwell?
The bushes grow 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, so they're usually set 3 to 5 feet apart in rows 8 to 10 feet apart. At 4 by 10 feet, an acre takes about 1,090 plants, which lands in the 1,000 to 2,499 tier.
When should I order?
Reach out between late October and winter for the best timing. Pixwell ships dormant and goes in the ground from late fall through early spring depending on your zone, and your quote includes a ship-by estimate.
How much is shipping?
We quote it with each order. Most wholesale shipments run about $0.15 to $0.25 per plant, depending on the delivery address and package weight. We send plants 2-day or 3-day from the middle of the country so the roots stay moist, which makes the coasts, remote areas, Alaska, and Hawaii cost more. Our free shipping offers don't apply to wholesale orders. How wholesale shipping works
Can I pick up my order?
Yes, and that skips shipping entirely. You can pick up from us in Northeast Oklahoma and Northwest Arkansas, and in Wisconsin during our digging seasons, usually late fall to early winter and late winter to early spring. Let us know you'd like to pick up when you ask for a quote. See the pickup map
What do I do with the plants when they arrive?
Open the boxes as soon as they arrive and plant within a day or two. If that's not possible, heel them in by setting the bushes in a shallow trench and covering the roots with moist soil. For a short wait, keep the roots damp and store the plants somewhere cool and dark, like a garage or basement.
