Browse currently available varieties →Aurora haskap (also called honeyberry) is a cold-hardy fruiting shrub that produces deep blue, elongated berries with a sweet-tart flavor. It is one of the varieties people pick when they want reliable production, sturdy plants, and berries that work well for fresh eating or for jam, syrup, and baking.
Haskaps bloom very early and usually ripen earlier than most berries, often kicking off the first “real” berry harvest of the season. Aurora is commonly described as a later-ripening haskap compared to many early varieties, which can help spread your harvest window when you plant more than one cultivar.
Quick plant facts
Plant type: Haskap (honeyberry), edible fruiting shrub
USDA zones: Commonly grown in Zones 2-7 (best performance in cooler climates)
Mature size: Typically 4-6 ft tall and 3-5 ft wide (varies with pruning and site)
Fruit details
Berry color: Dark blue with a waxy bloom
Berry shape: Elongated or oval (haskap “finger” shape is common)
Flavor: Sweet-tart, often described as a mix of blueberry and raspberry notes
Ripening: Early season overall, with Aurora often ripening toward the later end of the haskap window
Pollination requirements (important)
Aurora is not reliably self-fertile, it needs cross-pollination from a different haskap variety that blooms at the same time
Plant at least two compatible varieties for consistent fruit set
A common approach: pair Aurora with another mid-to-late blooming haskap cultivar nearby (within 25-50 ft, closer is better)
Growing requirements
Water: Consistent moisture during flowering and fruit fill improves berry size and reduces drop
Mulch: A 2-3 inch mulch layer helps hold moisture and reduce weeds (keep mulch off the crown)
Planting and spacing
Spacing: About 4-6 ft between plants, 8-10 ft between rows if planting multiples
Planting depth: Set at the same depth it was growing previously, then water in well
First year: Focus on root establishment, production usually increases noticeably after year 2-3
Care and pruning
Pruning: Minimal early on, then thin older wood as the plant matures to keep it productive
Best time to prune: Late winter to early spring while dormant
Fertility: Light feeding in spring can help, avoid over-fertilizing (too much nitrogen can reduce fruiting)
Cold and heat notes
Extremely cold-hardy, flowers early and can handle late frosts better than many fruit plants
In hot summer areas, afternoon shade and steady watering can help maintain plant vigor and berry quality

How we ship
Most orders go out via UPS with a 2-3 day transit time to most of the continental U.S. Plants are shipped dormant in late winter / early spring, packed wet to protect the root systems, and bundled by variety so they're ready to plant on arrival.
Hawaii & Alaska orders
For HI and AK addresses we ship via USPS. The other major carriers either don't service these areas for live plants or charge prohibitive rates that would more than double the cost of your order. USPS gives us a reliable, affordable path to get plants to you in good condition.
Want UPS or FedEx anyway?
If you're in HI or AK and want to use UPS or FedEx and cover the upgraded shipping cost, reach out to us immediately after placing your order with your order number. We'll send you the available options and a quote, and you can pick what works for you.
