Ranch Elderberry is a compact American elderberry variety that produces large clusters of dark purple berries in late summer. It is a strong choice for home gardens and small spaces because it stays shorter than many elderberries, while still delivering heavy bloom and fruit set when planted in a good sunny spot.

This shrub leafs out quickly in spring, flowers in early summer with flat, creamy-white clusters, then ripens berries as the season warms up. Ranch is also known for being adaptable, it handles a wider range of soils than many fruiting shrubs and can tolerate drier conditions once established, although consistent moisture improves berry size and yield.

Grow zones and site needs

USDA grow zones: 3-9

Sun: Full sun for best production, light shade is workable

Water: Drought tolerant once established, water during dry spells for better fruiting

Growth rate and mature size

Mature size: About 5-6 ft tall and 5-6 ft wide

Plant habit: Dense, multi-stem shrub that can be maintained with annual pruning

Flowering and fruiting period

Bloom time: Early summer

Fruit ripening: Late summer into early fall, commonly August to early September depending on your climate

Harvest notes: Pick when berries are fully dark and soft. Berries are borne in clusters and often ripen over a short window.

Pollination and planting with other varieties

Ranch can produce some fruit on its own, but elderberries crop much better with a second, different American elderberry variety nearby.

Plant 2 different elderberry varieties for stronger pollination and bigger harvests

Keep plants within 10-50 ft of each other for dependable cross-pollination

Good partner varieties often include other American elderberries such as Adams, York, Johns, Nova, Wyldewood, or Bob Gordon

Uses

Ranch elderberries are most often used for syrups, jellies, juice, and wine. As with elderberries in general, the berries are typically cooked and the stems are removed before processing.

We ship via: UPS USPS FedEx

How we ship

Most orders go out via UPS with a 2-3 day transit time to most of the continental U.S. Plants are shipped dormant in late winter / early spring, packed wet to protect the root systems, and bundled by variety so they're ready to plant on arrival.

Hawaii & Alaska orders

For HI and AK addresses we ship via USPS. The other major carriers either don't service these areas for live plants or charge prohibitive rates that would more than double the cost of your order. USPS gives us a reliable, affordable path to get plants to you in good condition.

Want UPS or FedEx anyway?

If you're in HI or AK and want to use UPS or FedEx and cover the upgraded shipping cost, reach out to us immediately after placing your order with your order number. We'll send you the available options and a quote, and you can pick what works for you.

Wholesale orders (100+ plants): We only ship wholesale orders on Mondays and Tuesdays. Larger orders sitting in a hot delivery truck over a weekend can damage or even kill the plants, especially for customers in the southern half of the U.S. Shipping early in the week ensures your plants reach you before any weekend transit delays.
