Duke Blueberry is a dependable early-season northern highbush variety grown for heavy yields, firm berries, and strong performance in colder-winter regions. It is a great choice if you want an early harvest, a vigorous upright plant, and fruit that holds up well for fresh eating, baking, and freezing.

Grow zones and sunlight

USDA grow zones: 4-7

Sun: Full sun for best yield and sweetness (6+ hours)

Fruit period and berry details

Duke is one of the earliest highbush blueberries to ripen in many areas.

Typical harvest window: Early summer (often June, sometimes into early July depending on climate)

Berry size: Medium to large

Texture: Firm with good shelf life and a clean picking scar

Flavor: Mild-sweet, classic blueberry taste that gets sweeter as berries fully ripen

Growth rate and mature size

Growth rate: Moderate to fast once established

Mature size: Typically 4-6 ft tall and 3-5 ft wide

Plant habit: Upright, vigorous, easy to manage with annual pruning

Pollination and planting with other varieties

Duke can produce on its own, but you will usually get bigger harvests and better berry size with cross-pollination.

Plant 2 different blueberry varieties with overlapping bloom

Keep plants within 5-20 ft of each other

Common pairing types are other northern highbush varieties that bloom around the same time

Soil pH and planting needs (most important)

Target soil pH: 4.5-5.5

Soil: Well-drained, high organic matter

Mulch: Pine bark, pine needles, or wood chips help retain moisture and support acidity

Water: Keep evenly moist, especially during flowering and fruit fill, avoid soggy roots

Pruning and production timeline

Year 3+: Remove a few older canes each winter to encourage new fruiting wood

Expect lighter crops early, then stronger production as the plant matures (often noticeably better by years 3-5)

How we ship

Most orders go out via UPS with a 2-3 day transit time to most of the continental U.S. Plants are shipped dormant in late winter / early spring, packed wet to protect the root systems, and bundled by variety so they're ready to plant on arrival.

Hawaii & Alaska orders

For HI and AK addresses we ship via USPS. The other major carriers either don't service these areas for live plants or charge prohibitive rates that would more than double the cost of your order. USPS gives us a reliable, affordable path to get plants to you in good condition.

Want UPS or FedEx anyway?

If you're in HI or AK and want to use UPS or FedEx and cover the upgraded shipping cost, reach out to us immediately after placing your order with your order number. We'll send you the available options and a quote, and you can pick what works for you.

Wholesale orders (100+ plants): We only ship wholesale orders on Mondays and Tuesdays. Larger orders sitting in a hot delivery truck over a weekend can damage or even kill the plants, especially for customers in the southern half of the U.S. Shipping early in the week ensures your plants reach you before any weekend transit delays.
