Magnolia Fig is a classic, large-fruited fig variety that is often sold as a reliable backyard fig for warm and mild-winter climates. You may also see it listed under the Brunswick name, since the two are commonly grouped together by sellers. The plant grows as a vigorous small tree or multi-stem shrub with big leaves and strong summer growth, making it a solid option for growers who want a productive fig that can be kept trimmed to fit smaller spaces.

The fruit is typically larger than many common fig varieties, with a darker bronze to purple-brown skin when ripe and a sweet, rich interior. Magnolia figs are great for fresh eating once fully soft and ripe, and they also perform well for preserves, baking, and drying. Like most common-type figs, Magnolia usually sets fruit without needing a pollinator.

Key growing details

USDA grow zones: Commonly 7-10, can be grown in Zone 6 with winter protection

Sun: Full sun for best growth and sweetness

Growth rate: Vigorous once established

Mature size: Often 10-20 ft unpruned, can be maintained around 6-10 ft with pruning or container growing

Fruiting period

Main crop: Late summer into early fall in many climates

Breba crop: Possible in warmer areas on older wood, not always consistent

Ripeness tip: Flavor improves when fruit is fully colored and soft, figs do not sweeten much after picking

Planting and care notes

Soil: Well-drained soil is important, avoid low spots that stay wet

Watering: Water regularly during establishment, then water during hot, dry stretches, especially while fruit is sizing up

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to manage height and encourage productive branching, avoid heavy pruning mid-season if you want maximum fruit

Cold protection: In cooler zones, winter protection helps preserve wood and can improve next season’s early growth and fruiting

Container option

Magnolia Fig can be grown in a large container to control size and make winter protection easier. Use a pot with excellent drainage, keep watering consistent during summer growth, and protect the container from deep freezes in winter.

How we ship

Most orders go out via UPS with a 2-3 day transit time to most of the continental U.S. Plants are shipped dormant in late winter / early spring, packed wet to protect the root systems, and bundled by variety so they're ready to plant on arrival.

Hawaii & Alaska orders

For HI and AK addresses we ship via USPS. The other major carriers either don't service these areas for live plants or charge prohibitive rates that would more than double the cost of your order. USPS gives us a reliable, affordable path to get plants to you in good condition.

Want UPS or FedEx anyway?

If you're in HI or AK and want to use UPS or FedEx and cover the upgraded shipping cost, reach out to us immediately after placing your order with your order number. We'll send you the available options and a quote, and you can pick what works for you.

Wholesale orders (100+ plants): We only ship wholesale orders on Mondays and Tuesdays. Larger orders sitting in a hot delivery truck over a weekend can damage or even kill the plants, especially for customers in the southern half of the U.S. Shipping early in the week ensures your plants reach you before any weekend transit delays.
