Jeanne Gooseberry is a productive, disease-resistant variety that produces sweet, medium-sized berries with a deep flavor that ripens to a purple-red color. The plant is compact and easy to manage, making it an excellent choice for home gardens. Jeanne is especially valued for its resistance to mildew and leaf spot, reducing the need for sprays and maintenance.

Botanical name: Ribes uva-crispa ‘Jeanne’

Mature spread: About 3 to 4 feet, upright and bushy

Fruit: Large, deep red berries with a sweet tart flavor and thin skin

Fruiting time: Late season, typically mid to late July in many climates

Pollination: Self fertile, no separate pollinator required (multiple plants will increase overall harvest)

Growing requirements

Light: Full sun to light part shade; more sun gives the best berry color and heaviest crops

Soil: Average to rich, well drained soil; avoid spots where water stands after rain

Watering: Keep evenly moist, especially during the first year and while berries are sizing up

Spacing: Plant about 3 to 4 feet apart in a row or hedge

Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove older, unproductive canes and thin the center for good air flow

Cold hardiness: Very cold hardy and well suited to northern gardens

This seller is great with communication. Shipped plants dormant which is great for the weather. One plant is showing greening at the base after 2 days inside.

How we ship

Most orders go out via UPS with a 2-3 day transit time to most of the continental U.S. Plants are shipped dormant in late winter / early spring, packed wet to protect the root systems, and bundled by variety so they're ready to plant on arrival.

Hawaii & Alaska orders

For HI and AK addresses we ship via USPS. The other major carriers either don't service these areas for live plants or charge prohibitive rates that would more than double the cost of your order. USPS gives us a reliable, affordable path to get plants to you in good condition.

Want UPS or FedEx anyway?

If you're in HI or AK and want to use UPS or FedEx and cover the upgraded shipping cost, reach out to us immediately after placing your order with your order number. We'll send you the available options and a quote, and you can pick what works for you.

Wholesale orders (100+ plants): We only ship wholesale orders on Mondays and Tuesdays. Larger orders sitting in a hot delivery truck over a weekend can damage or even kill the plants, especially for customers in the southern half of the U.S. Shipping early in the week ensures your plants reach you before any weekend transit delays.
