Cheyenne Blackberry

The Cheyenne blackberry is a powerhouse variety also developed by the University of Arkansas (introduced in 1976). It is specifically known for its exceptional winter hardiness and heavy yields.
Physical Characteristics
Unlike some of the newer thornless varieties, the Cheyenne is thorny. It has an erect to semi-erect growth habit, reaching heights of about 5 feet. While it is strong enough to stand on its own if pruned back to a stocky bush, many growers find that light trellising helps support the massive amount of fruit it produces.
Fruit and Flavor
The berries are large, firm, and jet-black. They have a distinctively sweet flavor with a slight raspberry-like undertone and a pleasant tartness. Because the fruit is so firm, it is one of the best varieties for:
- Freezing
- Making jams and jellies
- Machine harvesting (for larger operations)
Growing Requirements
USDA Zones: 5-9 (Highly adaptable to both cold northern winters and hot southern summers).
Ripening: It is an early-season variety, usually ripening in early June.
Soil: Needs well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH (5.5 to 6.5).
Maintenance: It is a vigorous grower and a strong producer but does require regular pruning of spent canes to maintain plant health.

How we ship
Most orders go out via UPS with a 2-3 day transit time to most of the continental U.S. Plants are shipped dormant in late winter / early spring, packed wet to protect the root systems, and bundled by variety so they're ready to plant on arrival.
Hawaii & Alaska orders
For HI and AK addresses we ship via USPS. The other major carriers either don't service these areas for live plants or charge prohibitive rates that would more than double the cost of your order. USPS gives us a reliable, affordable path to get plants to you in good condition.
Want UPS or FedEx anyway?
If you're in HI or AK and want to use UPS or FedEx and cover the upgraded shipping cost, reach out to us immediately after placing your order with your order number. We'll send you the available options and a quote, and you can pick what works for you.
