Triple Crown Planting Instructions

  1. Plant timing: plant in early spring as soon as the ground can be worked, or in fall in mild climates if the plant is dormant.
  2. Prep the site: choose full sun with well-drained soil. Remove weeds and loosen the soil 10 to 12 inches deep.
  3. Hydrate the roots: take the plant out of the package and soak the roots in a bucket of water for 1 to 2 hours. Do not soak overnight.
  4. Trim if needed: snip off any broken roots. If the cane is long or damaged, you can cut it back to about 6 to 12 inches to reduce stress.
  5. Dig the hole: make it wide enough to spread roots without bending them, and deep enough so the crown sits at soil level. A good target is roughly 8 to 10 inches wide and 6 to 8 inches deep, then adjust based on the root size.
  6. Make a small mound: put a small cone of soil in the bottom of the hole and drape the roots over it so they spread outward naturally.
  7. Set planting depth: position the crown so it ends up level with the surrounding soil. Do not bury it deep.
  8. Backfill carefully: refill the hole with loose soil, working soil in around the roots so there are no big air gaps. Firm gently with your hands.
  9. Water deeply: water slowly right after planting to settle soil around the roots.
  10. Mulch: apply 2 to 3 inches of mulch around the plant to hold moisture and block weeds, keeping mulch a couple inches away from the crown.
  11. Support plan: install a trellis early (posts and 2 wires). Triple Crown is vigorous and will be much easier to manage when trained.
  12. Aftercare (first 4 to 6 weeks): keep soil evenly moist while it establishes. Water when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil dry out. Avoid heavy fertilizer until you see new growth, then use a light, balanced feeding if your soil is poor.
  13. Cane management: in the first growing season, let new canes grow. When they reach about 4 to 5 feet, tip them a few inches to force side branches. Next year, those canes will fruit, and after harvest you cut

Description

Triple Crown blackberry is a thornless blackberry variety known for large, sweet berries and strong yields. It grows with a vigorous semi-erect habit, so it usually performs best with a trellis or support wires to keep canes organized and make harvest easier. Triple Crown fruits on second-year canes, so yearly pruning and cane management are the keys to keeping it productive and preventing the patch from getting overgrown.

  • Grow zones: USDA Zones 5 to 9
  • Mature size: About 5 to 8 feet tall with support, 4 to 6 feet wide (canes can be trained longer on a trellis)
  • Growth habit: Thornless, vigorous, semi-erect canes, benefits from trellising
  • Fruiting habit: Floricane-fruiting (berries form on second-year canes)
  • Harvest season: Mid to late summer, often with a long picking window
  • Fruit: Large, glossy black berries, very sweet flavor, good fresh eating quality
  • Yield: High, especially once plants are established
  • Sun needs: Full sun (best berry size and sweetness)
  • Soil: Well-drained soil, moderate fertility, slightly acidic to neutral pH
  • Water: Consistent moisture during bloom and fruiting, avoid waterlogged roots
  • Pollination: Self-fertile
  • Basic pruning: Remove spent floricanes after harvest, train and tip new primocanes to encourage branching and improve fruiting next season
  • Support: Strongly recommended (helps manage vigor and improves harvest access)
