Planting Instructions

  1. Choose the location

    • Pick a sunny spot with at least 6–8 hours of direct sun each day.

    • Soil should be loose and well drained, not waterlogged.

  2. Prepare the bed

    • Work the soil 12–18 inches deep in the area where the row will go.

    • Mix in compost or well-rotted manure so the soil is rich and crumbly.

    • Rake the area smooth.

  3. Dig the trench

    • Open a trench about 6–8 inches deep and 12–18 inches wide.

    • If you are planting more than one row, space rows about 3–4 feet apart.

  4. Place the crowns

    • Space crowns about 12–18 inches apart along the bottom of the trench.

    • Spread the roots out like a fan.

    • Set crowns so the growing point (top of the crown) faces upward.

  5. Cover the crowns

    • Cover crowns with about 2 inches of soil and water well.

    • As the new shoots grow over the first season, gradually pull more soil into the trench until it is filled to ground level.

  6. Mulch

    • Add a light mulch to help keep weeds down and hold moisture.

    • Keep mulch a little away from the young shoots.

  7. First-year care

    • Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy.

    • Keep the bed weed-free so young plants are not competing for water and nutrients.

    • Do not harvest spears the first two seasons; let the plants grow strong for future crops.

The UC 157 is a widely adaptable, high yielding asparagus variety developed by the University of California, Riverside. It is particularly famous for its exceptional heat tolerance and ability to thrive in climates with mild winters where other varieties struggle.

Here is the breakdown of growing conditions, zones, and planting details for UC 157 crowns.

——————————–

Growing Zones & Climate

  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 3 to 10.

    • Ideal Climates: It was specifically bred for warmer climates (Zones 8 to 10) like California and the southern US, as it does not require a long dormancy period to produce spears.

    • Cold Climates: Despite its warm weather breeding, it is remarkably cold hardy. In colder zones (3 to 7), it performs well but may benefit from a heavy layer of mulch in winter to protect the crowns from deep freezes.

Asparagus arrived over 2 weeks late, when I told the seller about it and he stated “ I’m not responsible, I did my job by shipping it, you have to pay for shipping it back if they are dead” crowns were very very small not what was described.
