Planting Instructions
Before planting
Keep roots cool and slightly moist until planting, not dried out and not sitting in standing water.
Right before planting, soak the bare roots in a bucket of clean water for about 30–60 minutes.
Choose the location
Pick a sunny spot with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
Soil should drain well and not stay soggy after rain.
Remove grass, weeds, and their roots from the planting strip.
Prepare the planting row
Loosen the soil in a trench or row about 12–18 inches wide and 8–10 inches deep.
Work in compost or well rotted manure to improve soil structure and fertility.
Avoid planting directly into pure compost; mix it with your native soil.
Spacing
Space Boyne plants about 2–3 feet apart in the row.
If you are planting multiple rows, leave about 6–8 feet between rows so you have room to walk and maintain plants.
Dig the planting hole
For each plant, dig a hole wide enough for the roots to spread naturally (about 10–12 inches wide).
Loosen the soil in the bottom and sides of the hole.
Set the plant depth
Make a small mound of soil in the center of the hole.
Spread the roots evenly over the mound so they fan out and angle slightly downward.
Position the plant so the crown (where roots meet the stem) is about 1–2 inches below the final soil surface.
Backfill and firm
Backfill the hole with the loosened soil, working it gently in around the roots.
Firm the soil lightly with your hands as you go to remove air pockets, but do not pack it hard.
Water in
Water thoroughly right after planting until the soil is evenly moist around the roots.
If the soil settles and exposes roots, add a little more soil to cover them and keep the crown at the right depth.
Mulch
Spread 2–3 inches of mulch (straw, wood chips, pine bark) along the row around the plants.
Keep mulch a couple of inches away from the canes to prevent rot.
Mulch helps keep moisture in and suppresses weeds.
First season care
Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged, while plants are getting established.
Keep weeds and grass out of the row so they do not compete with young roots.
If canes grow tall the first year, you can lightly tip them and add simple support (posts and a wire) to keep them upright.
